In honor of Mother’s Day, we’re highlighting our very own mother/daughter duo, Staci and Monica Roos! Staci and Monica work together on the Susan G. Komen 3-Day® events—Staci as a 3-Day Coach and Monica as the Social Media Coordinator. Read on to learn more!
How long have you been with Event 360?
Staci: I started with Event 360 in 2004 and have staffed every San Diego 3-Day since. My role as a coach for the Komen 3-Day has evolved over time to become even more rich and fulfilling with each passing year. My relationships with participants have become friendships as we share the common goal of funding research to find the cures for breast cancer while helping to level the playing field for access to early diagnosis and care.
Monica: I’ve been at Event 360 for a little over 10 months. I studied broadcast journalism in college, worked in TV for 4 years post-college and wanted to make a career change! I knew about Event 360 from my mom and knew all the work they did for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day. Since my grandmother passed away from breast cancer, I wanted to try to get involved in this project as well.
Can you describe your Mother/Daughter relationship in a few words?
Staci: We are, first and foremost, loving friends.
Monica: I’m grateful for the close relationship we have. She has always pushed me to be the best version of myself and supported me through thick and thin.
Did you ever think you’d work alongside your daughter/mom?
Staci: I’m old enough to know you never say never (wink, wink).
Monica: When I was younger, I always wanted to be a car designer. I’d draw cars, car parts, etc. I never thought I would end up where I am, though I’m happy I did. It’s a pretty unique experience getting to work with a family member even when it’s not a family business.
Coolest part about working with each other?
Staci: Having a family member who is in-step with your day-to-day work is so cool and not something many people get to experience! I’m so proud that Monica fills an important role on a very important project and one that is very dear to our hearts.
Monica: The coolest part about working with my mom is the stories I get to hear about her from my coworkers and other 3-Day® participants. Since I interact with participants and interview them for the 3-Day blog, they often see my last name and ask if I’m related to Staci. When they find out she’s my mom, they always tell me how lucky I am and how awesome she is. Of course I already knew she was awesome, but it’s pretty cool to hear it from other people she’s interacted with and worked with over the years!
Favorite 3-Day Memories?
Staci: Monica just could not wait to become a 3-Day walker. When she was younger Monica helped check-in participants at 3-Day Reunion Parties and Expos. She was a walker-stalker several times before she was old enough to be a walker herself. She carried the My Grandmother flag during the Opening Ceremony of her first event as a 3-Day walker, where she embraced fundraising and raised over $5,300 in memory of her grandmother. We staffed our first 3-Day together in 2021 and it was amazing to watch her in action — taking her checklist of tasks so seriously. At the end of Day 3, sharing the fulfilling exhaustion of a job well done was priceless.
Monica: Before I was old enough to walk the 3-Day, I was a walker stalker for my Dad when he walked the San Diego 3-Day. With my Dad walking and my mom working the event, I’d go rally and support them both, making signs to cheer on my Dad and get to see my mom in her work environment. I always thought my mom had the coolest job. It was different than any of my friends’ moms’ jobs. I never imagined we’d work together, but it’s pretty funny how people I met years and years ago visiting my mom on event are now some of my coworkers!
Catch Staci and Monica in action at our upcoming 2022 Susan G. Komen 3-Day events.
Happy Mother’s Day to all!
